2020 MTBA Fat Bike National Championships
Time & Location
About the event
If you’ve ever needed an excuse to visit Broome in the dry season, here it is; the 2020 MTBA Fat Bike National Championships.
The Championships will be a short course race format of 40 minutes for men, 30 minutes for women and 20 minutes for juniors with improvised and natural beach obstacles to create a unique race experience that blends the stunning Kimberley coastline, Cable Beach’s renowned white sands, our pearling history and ancient aboriginal culture.
Cable Beach is a perfect canvas to craft a fat bike course. The massive 10 metre tides of the Kimberley coast create a relatively flat, broad beach with compacted sand. There will still be some thigh burning soft sand on course, but the majority will be on smooth rolling hard packed sand. Fat Bikes might have been designed for a blustery northern hemisphere winter, but they’re perfectly at home on tropical beaches.
Spectators will have an uninterrupted view of the course from an elevated vantage adjoining the eastern side of the course. Those wishing to see the action up close, can make their way down to the beach and enjoy the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and a sunset like only Broome can provide.
The Championships are open to cycling athletes across Australia riding bikes with tyres at least 3.8 inches wide………sorry Plus Riders, you’re just not fat enough. Traditional mountain bikes are welcome to participate but will not be eligible for championship points or prizes. We will have a small fleet of loan ‘fatties’ thanks to Broome Cycles and Broome Camp School if you’re keen to be part of the real action.
